The Swedish fid is a great tool for opening the plaited cover/strands of all ropes and the use of splicing 3 strand, 4 strand and 8 plait ( multiplait ) ropes. These fids help greatly when trying to splice tight stranded ropes, instead of trying to pull them open with your hands.
