Description Suitable for: Woods, Plastic, Thin metal sheeting Carbon steel hole saws are used for making large holes in wood, plastic, plasterboard and soft sheet metal with a maximum cutting depth of approximately 25 mm. Ideal for large holes For example: locksets in doors, or plumbing pipes. Hole saws have a central pilot drill that bites into the material first. This keeps the cylindrical saw blade in line so that it then cuts a perfect circular hole. The central drill bit is part of the detachable accessory known as the arbor. The arbor drill bit is simply screwed to the blade before cutting commences. When a clean splinter-free hole is needed, drill from both sides. This requires a pilot hole be drilled through the object initially. This will transfer the centre mark to the opposite side for perfect alignment. General tips: • Medium speeds are required for wood and low speeds for metal. • If possible, use a low geared high torque drilling machine with safety clutch. • Always make sure the drill bit is tightened properly in the arbor. • Excessive heat can damage the blade and a stop-start drilling action is important. • A pumping action will help to extract sawdust and also limit overheating. • Deeper holes can be drilled if the excess wood is chiseled out as you proceed. Partial or blind holes cannot be made with Hole Saws – use a Forstner bit instead.
